ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (First Alert 4) – FEMA has awarded St. Clair County $2.2 million for a flood-risk reduction project.
The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program awarded the money to St. Clair County to acquire 36 flood-prone structures and adjacent lots. To prevent future loss, the properties will be returned to open space and deed-restricted.
“FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program enables communities to implement critical mitigation measures to reduce or eliminate the risk of future disaster losses,” said FEMA Region 5 Regional Administrator Tom Sivak. “This project permanently removes structures from the floodplain and gives property owners the ability to relocate to areas with lower flood risk and protect the life they’ve built from future loss.”
FEMA will pay 100% of the $2,227,135 eligible project cost for the project. FEMA will also provide $111,356 in sub-recipient management costs to assist St. Clai County in managing the grant.
Also, on Wednesday, Congresswoman Nikki Budzinksi announced that St. Clair County would receive $89,533,000 in disaster relief through the Community Development Block Granite-Disaster Recovery program.
“This funding announcement is a huge win for our communities that are still recovering from the devastating storms. This vital support will help restore critical infrastructure, provide much-needed assistance to families, and give businesses the boost they need to rebuild,” said Congresswoman Budzinski. “I’m proud to have helped secure the Presidential Disaster Declaration for St. Clair, and even prouder to see that it’s now turning into continued, tangible support for those who need it most.”
